Theprint art of Wang Gongyi: “Lingming” of shadows
By. Xia Kejun
Probably, people who are enthusiastic about the print art have a quiet temperament. Printmaking is a handwork requiring patience and good measurement of rationality andprocedures. A well-made print calls for time, a detail-oriented mind, and maintenanceof composure during scrutinizing and self-inspection. A print artist should beable to appreciate differences of singularity and complexity. The subtledifferences provide aftertaste for artists and enthusiast of the print art.

The female artist, Wang Gongyi (honored as Mr. Wang Gongyi), has been inher 70s. Over the past decades, her passion for the print art has never beenfading. After finishing her studies abroad, she returned to China, and startedher artistic creations. Keeping a low profile and enduring pains silently, Mr.Wang has kept the “Lingming” in her heart. What is “Lingming”? “Lingming”,according to Wang Yangming, a scholar of the psychology of the mind, refers tothe indelible conscience to sense the world. To artists, “Lingming” does notmean moral reflections but is to remain absolutely sensitive to the world. Thingsof all forms change constantly, but one’s heart can stay pure and optimistic. Paintingmore like a trace of light which is cast on things whose luster is hidden bythe secular world. Through painting, the fleeting beauty of things is record, and preserved forever.
