“Next Century” China-Sweden Printmaking Exchange Traveling Exhibitionis held atÅlgården Gallery from February 8th to 22nd.

Ålgården Artists Workshops and Gallery (Ålgården Konstnärernas Verkstäder och  Galleri) is located at a historical mill, originally built in 1647; From1898-1930, it was Borås Water Works; Since later 20th century, it had been vacant for some time, until the printmaking workshop relocated here in 2000, since their founding in 1973. Much like Grafik I Väst we introduced in the last article, Ålgården is also a members-run non-profit organization, who is funded partially by the municipal. They currently have 110 members who are key holders, and often welcome visiting artists for short term visits.
There are four buildings at Ålgården:
The red brick house, first on  the left after entering the front gate, was built in 1918 as the second power station for the city of Borås.  Except for the light renovation in 1925 and 1945 which altered the direction of the front door, not much change has been done to the architecture. It now serves as the studio for offset printing, silkscreen and glass fusing.
The second building on the left, the red two-story house, set up as a single-family house, functions as the office and meeting space for the workshop on the firstfloor, and provide two guest rooms for visiting artists on the second floor.Several Chinese artists have stayed here during our Next Century Project.
At the end of the road, the white house was built in 1923, as the filter facility for the waterworks. It now serves as theetching studio.
On the river, the white-walled, blacksaddle-roof house with long and narrow arch windows was built in 1863. In the beginning, the façade was made of grey stone. A renovation in the early 1920s resulted in the current light color façade, and had not changed much since. This may be the oldest surviving industrial building in Borås. It is today the exhibition center of Ålgården, and where the second stop of our traveling exhibition is held.
After our first stop in downtown Gothenburg, 44 Swedish artists from different West Sweden graphic workshops ledby Grafik I Väst also joined the traveling exhibition, making the total numberof participainting artists as 67, further enriching the content of the show. Our Chinese artist-in-residency Guo Mengdi, Chang Bowen and Lü Wenting also visited the exhibition in person.
The Next Century Project is an exchangeproject between Grafik I Väst, the printmakers’ association based in Göteborg, and a collection of West Sweden graphic workshops, including: Ålgården,Litografiska Akademin Tidaholm, Marks Konstgrafiska Verkstad, Skaraborgs KonstgrafiskaVerkstad,Vänersborgs Konstgrafiska Verkstad,KKV Göteborg andBolaget Vardagsbilder, with Chinese aritsts. Between June 2019 and September 2020, 15 Chinese artists are invited to these workshops for a month-long artist residency. Their works will also beincluded in a traveling exhibition starting in Grafik I Väst Gallery, and continue on in six different  locations in West Sweden. This exhibition included 28 pieces from 24 artists, who come from all over China, and with diverse background: some teach in the academies, some are independent artists or run independent studios. Our goal is to present a wide spectrum of Chinese artists who have independent thinking and distinctive styles to the Swedish audience.

The workshopwas founded in 1973 as Borås printmaking workshop and moved under it’s presentname to Ålgården in 2000. It’s runned non-profit by an association of professional artists with support from the municipality and has today about 110 members (key holders). We also offers guests to come and work for a period oftime.

We are beautifully situated at Ålgården by the river Viskan in Borås near the west coast of Sweden. At our disposal we have four larger buildings and two outhouses in a smaller park area. In the maim building we arrange exhibitions by  both national and international artists. We also arrange courses in different techniques. The workshops are divided into three – one for lithography, silkscreen and glass – one building for intaglio printing – andone for a digital workshop, kitchen and guest rooms Just behind a small hillthere is Knalleland where you find all kind of shops.
