With this exhibition most of the moths come from Changbai mountain in Jilin Provence
with a few coming from Mexico and other parts of the United States.
The scroll is an unusual form in that
it is perhaps a very early form of “the book” and a way of “reading im ages”. Another aspect of the scroll is that its ability to change its scale, in that it can be rolled out
for a large space to see in its entirety or seen/displayed in portions.
They in themselves are perhaps precursors to digital
media and ideas
that we explore now with video and interactive art.
While working with the biodiversity of moths for over twenty years now,
the display and exhibition of them continues to be explored.
Trying to display a large number of them in limited space has always been a challenge.
To understand the complex variations and the numerous species that
exist has been a concern in presenting the work.
Often many images have gotten left out because of space limitations.
As someone who has worked in print media for many years, the carrier of the image has always been paramount.
Working with Xuan type papers has intensified recently,
especially after a research trip to Anhui province last summer.
We visited eight different workshops out of the over four hundred
that still make paper there today.
This trip has been truly inspirational by seeing the vast amount of papers that I have not worked with before and the long historic tradition
of paper making in China. Most of the papers that were acquired are not available to artist in the United States.
This exhibition at AC gallery has opened a new opportunity for binging to view a large number of
moth species in a manne r I have not explored before. Traveling to Liulichang to purchase papers for testing, I viewed a number of traditional Chinese scroll works. After doing a number of tests and preliminary print
s it was decided to make scrolls for this exhibition. With the help from a shop that I have been purchasing paper from, we found a beautiful Xuan paper available in rolls that printed beautifully. This lead to the decision to embark on a substantial project of
producing large format scrolls that are approximately ten meters long each. These works are hybrids of ancient and new digital technologies o
f applying contemporary images into a venerable tradition.
