Preface

The Historical origins of Chinese and European printmaking are varied and constantly changing through the different social development process. The Buddhist printmaking started in Tang Dynasty formed a magnificent and long-standing social transmissibility with its fabulous carving skills and self-innovation printing technology. European traditional printmaking, which has exquisite shapes and handcrafted techniques, created artistic classics admired and respected by later generations.
Print is developing with the revolution of printing technology. After centuries changes of art concept and the continuous development of science and technology progress, print has gradually become the artistic form of its trump technology. In the long historical process, both pushed by mutual exploring and artistic thinking of printmakers and artists of several generations, countless prints classics are left for the world art history, providing a valuable diversified view of the contemporary printmaking world for the future inheritance of masterpieces.The exhibition "Imprinting on Plain Notes" -- 2021 International Original Printmaking Exchange Exhibition brings together more than 160 works of contemporary printmakers from the United States, European countries and China. It aims to promote us to take a global view and look far into the future through equal communication of print art form, and to seek consensus, seek common ground while reserving differences, seek development in the aspect of art innovation, art education and talents training.The works created by 18 foreign artists and 22 domestic artists in this exhibition will naturally produce different comparisons and differences, which will let us see their different views on art and education,understanding the artistic relationship between printmaking works and society, times and real life.It also presents different general characteristics and individual styles. In the era of new technology, new media and new methods, new vitality and new development direction are bound to be generated for a painting genre, but the technical beauty, simplicity and artistic thinking of original prints are still having lasting charms. With the expansion of international vision, printmaking, as an international art language, has formed a new development possibility of complementary advantages and distinctive features in aesthetic concept and printmaking ontology language.Chinese and western printmakers, artists use traditional tools and medium materials, such as carving knives,iron pens and scorpers to create works with different materials. Therefore the magic of creating process, the charming of using varied printmaking materials, the thinking of printmakers still produce great artistic thoughts and individual expression of self-spiritual liberation.
These works reflect the development of contemporary printmaking medium and method from a different perspective, stimulating or changing us to rethink the art of print. Unknown territory implied in the works are our common concerns of special interest, encouraging us to constantly explore the hidden opportunities and possibilities in the art practice of print art itself and print art education. It also makes the communication between Chinese and Western prints more realistic and long-term!
The purpose of art exchange is not simply to learn from each other, but to explore the causes and results of their respective development. For higher art education, the profound significance of communication lies in the release of artistic ideas and the understanding of educational concepts, which directly extends to the cultivation of students' independent thought personality and innovation ability. The change of The Times creates the height of art education, and the expansion of thinking is moving forward with the future. I believe that through the successful holding of this exhibition, we can not only comprehensively display the character and charm of printmaking art, but also bring broad and profound thinking breadth for our art education!
