The lecture centered on the "New Media Art Creation Practice" course. Professor Wang Zhigang introduced the four core parts of the course: information, media, narration and experience. The lecture was held online and on site. Major art academies and universities across China, including China Academy of Art, Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, Yunnan Academy of Fine Arts, Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, Jinling Art Museum, Shenzhen University, Changsha Normal University, Central University of Finance and Economics, Dalian University, Shenyang University, as well as Guangdong University of Finance and Economics, participated in this event through Tencent Meeting.

In the lecture, Professor Wang Zhigang introduced media as the carrier in information dissemination. Media and information dissemination are both closely related to science and technology. Once any new technology comes into being, it will produce a new kind of media. Ways of information dissemination will then continue to follow the development of new-media art. In other words, both of them will always go with the birth of a new technology. From a horizontal perspective, there is experience and narration, which means the connection between a subject and an object. Now subjects and objects are not distinguished in that way, but discussion on these two dimensions is still necessary from a creator’s perspective.

Generally, experience is about objects. A viewer’s experience about an art work may deviate from many traditional ways. In the past, all art forms, such as traditional painting, sculpture, architecture, and music, had their fixed aesthetic modes and territories. Now they have integrated with some new technologies, so experience modes have become multi-dimensional. There are all kinds of possibilities, such as the combination of online and offline experience and the combination of virtual and real experience.

Then, from the perspective of a creator, Professor Wang Zhigang discussed whether we could tell stories in new ways instead of sticking to traditional ways. He took films as an example and said that filming is a very powerful narrative language of art. He thinks the earliest system of filming actually includes two core concepts, that is, long-lens aesthetics and montage. The two concepts form a basic narrative structure of filming. The vast majority of movies-not just video art works-are based on the continuous derivation and development of these two concepts. After the birth of new-media art, how to build a new narrative system is very important when we discuss VR, AR, or any other kind of new-media art that’s particularly popular. We are still in the process of exploring. There is not a structure that’s fairly systematic. It will be a process of lasting exploration for future scholars and artists.

People usually regard media as a container or just a carrier. What do they carry? They carry information. Media mean more than a basic carrier or container for information dissemination now. They have other functions. In addition to equipment, they have produced organizational forms and social mechanisms. Therefore, they have taken the initiative in sending information. Furthermore, they have even covered the concept of information transmission itself.

At last, Professor Wang Zhigang also introduced his own experience. “Experience” is a very debatable word. For example, experience economy is often mentioned and hyped. Especially, people used to mention product experience when talking about electronic products earlier. When it comes to the word itself, it is very interesting that it is about our bodies. It must be related to our previous experience. It is not a simple unknown exploration of new things, but a connection with the past. Therefore, experience is actually a process of connecting the past and the future. A good experience may fully mobilize the connection with your past experience, and then project it into your thinking about the future. Therefore, this is his definition of an experience. This process is supposed to dig out the value of experience itself in this respect.
